Island destinations frequently have air schedules that look strangely rigid, with everything arriving within a few hours. The airfield, not the demand, is usually writing that timetable.

Land constrains the runway

Islands rarely offer the flat, long stretch that a runway needs, so strips are often built on the only viable ground and cannot easily be extended.

Runway length determines which aircraft can operate and with what payload, so a short runway can rule out direct long-haul service entirely.

Where extension would mean reclamation or cutting into terrain, the cost is large enough that the constraint tends to persist for decades.

One runway means a strict sequence

With a single strip, every arrival and departure takes its turn. Movements per hour are capped by separation requirements and by how quickly aircraft clear the runway.

Airlines therefore compete for the same limited windows, and the schedule clusters rather than spreads.

A single aircraft that becomes disabled on the runway stops all operations, because there is no parallel to switch to.

Night operations are often unavailable

Operating after dark requires runway and approach lighting, emergency cover and staffing through the night, all of which have to be funded year round.

Smaller island fields commonly operate in daylight only, which removes the hours that would otherwise relieve the daytime congestion.

Seasonal daylight variation then moves the operating window through the year, changing schedules with the calendar.

Diversion options change the fuel load

An aircraft must carry fuel to reach an alternate airport if it cannot land. Over water, the nearest suitable alternate may be a long way off.

That fuel is weight, and weight displaces payload, which is why some island services carry fewer passengers or less cargo than the aircraft could otherwise take.

When weather at the destination is marginal, the required reserve grows and the payload shrinks further.

Disruption has nowhere to absorb

With few daily movements and limited parking, a single delayed aircraft can occupy a stand needed by the next arrival.

There is usually no spare aircraft on the island and no crew base, so a technical problem waits for help to be flown in.

This is why island itineraries benefit from a buffer day before any onward long-haul connection, since a single canceled sector can push a traveler past the next available departure entirely.

Ferries and inter-island services rarely absorb the overflow either, because their own capacity is set for residents and freight rather than for a stranded aircraft load arriving at once.
